Methods of Studying Gastro-intestinal Motility: Large Intestine

چکیده

The colon serves to absorb fluid and electrolytes, to mix its contents, to store its contents and to empty it in a controlled fashion. Motility, absorption and secretion closely interact to fulfil these functions. Tone, phasic contractions and ano-rectal closure are the main principles of colonic motility. They are controlled by the enteric nervous system. Colonic motility differs from that in other parts of the gut in that it is very slow and irregular, coordinated activity is rare and orad movements normal. The methods to study colonic motility are radiology which is largely abandoned, manometry with perfused catheters or ambulant with tip catheters, the use of the barostat, radioscintigraphy, marker transit, and electromyography. They all measure different aspects be it flow of colonic contents as in radioscintigraphy and marker transit or be it wall contractions as in manometry and electromyography or be it tone as in the barostat. They are therefore complimentary. So far, only marker transit in the colon and manometry in the ano-rectum are widely clinically used.

Post-operative absorption of water from the small intestine.

An investigation of water absorption from the small intestine after abdominal surgery has produced more detailed information on the effect of trauma on the motility of the gastro-intestinal tract. Whereas after trauma the equilibration of tritiated water given by the oral and colonic routes is retarded, given by the jejunal route it is normal.

The Enhancing Effect of Sodium Glycocholate and Sodium Salicylate on Rats Gastro-intestinal Permeability to Insulin

There have been numerous efforts to formulate insulin into an oral dosage form. The major problems involved with the oral administration of insulin are acidic and enzymatic decomposition by the gastric medium, and poor absorption in the small intestine due to its macromolecular structure. This study attempted to test the enhancing ability of two absorption enhancers, sodium glycocholate (Na-G...

Methods for the analysis of intestinal function.

The intestinal tract, an organ of considerable complexity, requires application of numerous techniques for analysis of its physiology and perturbations by toxicologic agents. This review describes the methodology of importance in analysis of the absorptive function of the intestine and the transit of intestinal contents. Methods for studying absorption are categorized according to the technique...

Effect of traditional acupuncture on proximal colonic motility in conscious dogs.

Acupoints on the Large Intestine Meridian and specific acupoints related with large intestine have been empirically used to treat large intestinal disease. However, the relationship between acupoints related with large intestine and their functions has not been investigated fully. We investigated whether large intestine-related acupoints affect colonic motility in conscious dogs implanted with ...
